My puppy was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at age 6 months. The vet said the only surgery that would help would be to cut off the head of the femur and let the joint fuse together. I was appalled and said I would try some natural approaches first. For the first few days I gave him an anti-inflammatory prescribed by the vet and would use when he had a rought day. Within about 4-6 months he seldom if ever needed the drugs again. My dog is now over 6 years old and runs like a puppy, jumps up on most chairs and beds with ease, never limps and only occasionally gets protective of his bad hip if you vigorously squeeze it or accidentally hit it. I have given him every day since his diagnosis an omega fish oil capsule squeezed into a high vitamin gravy I buy at Pet Smart (but will convert to the new Pet Health multi-vitamin) mixed with a generous helping of the Pet Health glucomasamine and OPC. While he is a small dog, I probably use 2-3 times the serving size so he gets a generous dose of the OPC. Larger dogs could also get more capsules of the fish oil. I use a sharp knife and cut a small hole in the end of the capsule then squeeze it into the OPC blend and vitamin gravy. My dog loves the stuff! He will jump and bark as soon as he sees me get the bottles out of the cupboards. Hope this helps. Basic remedy - fish oil, multi-vits, pet health = really happy dog!
