Dog with Open Sores

I rescued a small dog who had been injured or shot.  A deer fly laid eggs in the wound, and when I found it, (small poodle) I poured hydrogen peroxide on the wound only to find maggots coming out.  It turned out the maggots saved its life by eating the rotting flesh.  The dog had been so neglected that a piece of screen had been tied in its hair on its stomach for so long, that its skin had grown around it, the screen was actually imbedded in its skin.  I removed the screen, shaved the matted mess to find a quarter size opening with the deer fly larvae.

Once I removed all the larvae, you could literally put your finger into its thigh, several inches.  The wound was far too large to stitch closed.

After I took it to the vet and received that determination, I irrigated the wound three times per day and used a very thick salve on the wound to act like a band aid.  It took a while, but with diligent cleaning and the ‘salve’ acting like a second skin, the wound closed completely.  This kind of wound takes that kind of attention, but can close and heal.   The salve I used is normally used on horses.   It was much thicker than Vaseline, I do not know what it is called.

We named the dog, Gypsie, and he was eventually adopted to a lovely family.

 Good Luck.
